16 November 2007 - More Special Schools open - Ruane

Education Minister Caitríona Ruane has welcomed reports that most special schools are open for children.

The Minister has just written to every classroom assistant highlighting her wish for an early resolution to the dispute.

The Minister said: "Indications are that most special schools are able to provide services for children who attended, with only five schools closed. A number of other schools have experienced impacts due to industrial action, but this is a greatly improved situation compared to last month when it was reported that 27 special schools were forced to close.

"I would pay tribute to school principals, teachers, classroom assistants and other staff who are continuing to meet the needs of our most vulnerable children. It is important that children do not suffer unduly as a result of industrial action and I recognise and welcome the fact that classroom assistants have returned to work.

"I hope this return continues so the education of all children can get back to normal."
