11 November 2008 - Revised Curriculum Better Preparing Children For 21st Century - Ruane

In the coming weeks Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, will be outlining to parents the benefits of the revised curriculum through leaflets distributed by schools.

Speaking as the first leaflets arrive in homes across the North the Minister said: “My Department has just issued 350,000 leaflets to schools across the North, providing details of the revised curriculum. These will go to every family who has a child in a primary or post-primary school.

“We live in changing times and the school curriculum needs to be able to adapt to them. The revised curriculum provides schools and teachers with more flexibility to meet the educational needs of all children. There continues to be a strong focus on reading, writing and maths, and developing knowledge and understanding. But, unlike the previous curriculum, content within curricular areas is less rigid, placing a greater emphasis on developing the skills our children and young people need today.

“Through the revised curriculum I am confident that Principals and teachers will carry on delivering a quality education that is in the best interests of all our children and young people – one that better prepares them for life and work in the 21st century.”

English and Irish versions of the leaflets, and translations of the leaflets into Cantonese, Filipino, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese and Ulster Scots, are available on the Department’s website www.deni.gov.uk.
