Schoolchildren + Rockets + Fun = Stem
Tuesday, 24 November 2009Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, joined school children at the ‘STEM Experience’ event to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects.
Speaking at the event organised by Sentinus the Minister said: “I know from attending previous STEM events there is more to these subjects than meets the eye. The interactive workshops being showcased here include space exploration, robots and pneumatic rockets, this couldn’t be further from the lessons some of us will remember. Events such as these demonstrate that STEM subjects can be fun, they open up the exciting possibilities and career options that these subjects can lead to.
“Recently my Department, along with the Department for Employment and Learning, launched the Report of the STEM review to ensure the future success of these subjects and encourage young people to get involved from an early age. We must ensure that through STEM, future generations assist in the growth of a dynamic and innovative economy, enhancing both our local and the global communities.
“I want to thank Sentius for organising this event in Belfast and their hard work in promoting STEM subjects in our schools and colleges. I understand future events are planned for Derry and Armagh and would encourage all schools where possible to get involved. They are the ideal opportunity for children from all sectors to come together to learn and develop new skills in another environment.”
