Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, has announced the appointment of a new member to the Board of the Belfast Education and Library Board.
Councillor Máire Hendron has joined the Board as a local council nominee.
Councillor Hendron lives in Belfast. Prior to her retirement in 1995 she was Head of the Home Economics Department in Rathmore Grammar School. Since 2005 she has been a member of the Belfast Visitor and Convention Bureau Board, the East Belfast Partnership Board and the Eastern Health and Social Services Council Board which ended in 2007. Councillor Hendron is also currently a Board member of the Avoniel Playcentre and Chairperson of the fund raising committee of the East Belfast Branch of the Northern Ireland Hospice.
Councillor Hendron is a member of the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland and has been a member of Belfast City Council since 2005.

- The five Education and Library Boards are statutory bodies which perform a wide range of functions in the funding and delivery of local education, youth and library services for their respective areas.
- Board members are appointed by the Education Minister in accordance with Schedule 2 of the Education and Libraries (NI) Order 1986.
- The Board member listed is a replacement Council nominee.
- The term of appointment is normally four years; however, the tenure this time will be affected by structural changes flowing from the Review of Public Administration and the creation of the new Education and Skills Authority (ESA).
- The Board member listed does not receive annual remuneration in respect of their appointment, although travelling & subsistence allowance and financial loss allowance are awarded.
- This appointment has been made in accordance with the OCPA NI Code of Practice. All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for the political activity of appointees (if any declared) to be published.
- Councillor Hendron has declared that she obtained office as a District Councillor, held office as Chair of a local branch of a political party and has canvassed on behalf of a political party, or helped at elections.
