Wednesday, 10 March 2010

Employment Minister, Sir Reg Empey, today pledged his Department’s support for those hardest hit by the downturn in greater Belfast.

Speaking at a meeting with local politicians and business leaders from a wide range of sectors, the Minister outlined how the Department for Employment and Learning is providing practical advice and assistance to local businesses and individuals. The meeting was attended by councillors from Belfast City Council and Castlereagh Borough Council. In addition, MLAs and MPs from across Belfast were present as were representatives from the local Chambers of Commerce and Trade.

The Minister said: "Northern Ireland’s economic recovery requires a proactive strategy with government, the business and educational communities working together towards a common goal – a brighter future for our people. For its part, my Department will continue to ensure that the appropriate employment, training and educational opportunities are made available to those who have been affected by the recession, so that the workforce is equipped with the appropriate skills which will be needed when the upturn comes."

Sir Reg also highlighted the important role that receiving feedback on the Department’s suite of programmes plays. He said: "Central to our recovery will be the requirement for demand-led skills provision. With this in mind, I welcome comment on my Department’s programme provision. Today’s meeting offers stakeholders from a wide range of sectors the opportunity to play their part in shaping our future training provision and ensure that the initiatives available are relevant, timely and tailored to the needs of businesses and the workforce. Ultimately, this will crucial to Northern Ireland’s future prosperity."

This is the latest in a series of meetings the Minister is holding with local councils and businesses throughout Northern Ireland.
