Empey shares best practice in Singapore

Thursday, 19 February 2009

Employment and Learning Minister, Sir Reg Empey, has met with employment and education leaders during a two day visit to Singapore.

The visit is the second part of the Minister’s visit to Southeast Asia which began in Malaysia earlier this week and is aimed at exploring employment and training solutions during the current economic downturn.

Among Sir Reg’s appointments during the Singapore part of his visit was a meeting hosted by the British High Commissioner, when the subject of preparing people for work, one of the Department’s key themes, was discussed.

Speaking after the meeting, the Minister said: “It is important that Northern Ireland learns from best practice here in Singapore and indeed elsewhere. A global approach to training and employment is needed now more than ever, as we prepare ourselves for the future in anticipation of the upturn in the economy.”

During his trip the Minister also met with the Ministry of Manpower and the Workforce Development Agency to learn more about what they are doing to develop a globally competitive workforce.

Commenting afterwards, Sir Reg said: “Today’s meeting has highlighted the need for a flexible, responsive and competitive workforce. During these difficult times, we must encourage employers and employees alike to learn for life and advance their skills. Singapore has acknowledged this through the work of the Workforce Development Agency.”

Sir Reg also called on the Institute for Adult Learning, Singapore Polytechnic and the Institute of Technical Education during the final day of his trip. The Polytechnic has links with the University of Ulster and, whilst these are in an early development stage, the Minister was encouraged by the visit.

He said: “The development of educational partnerships on an international stage provides an opportunity to take forward new and exciting opportunities that will benefit all of our people, both socially and economically.”
