Consultation launched on workplace dispute resolution
Monday, 1 June 2009A public consultation has begun which seeks to gather opinions on a range of topics across the subject area of workplace dispute resolution in Northern Ireland.
Administered by the Department for Employment and Learning, the consultation has been prepared following extensive engagement through a pre-consultation process with key stakeholders over the last 12 months, which revealed a general desire for a reform of current systems.
Employment and Learning Minister, Sir Reg Empey, said: “Disputes inevitably arise from time to time, even in the most harmonious workplaces. If handled poorly, they are bad for business, bad for morale and bad for productivity. More than ever in these difficult times, it is vital that we have in place mechanisms for dealing with them constructively and fairly. I have asked for a fundamental review of existing arrangements to ensure that systems best reflect local needs and priorities and I would encourage those having an interest in this area to contribute their views.”
In addition to seeking views in writing in response to the published consultation document, the Department will be participating in a number of events during the consultation period which will afford an opportunity to engage in debate on the issues.
The consultation will cover a range of key issues including what more can be done to prevent disputes at work, whether existing formal dispute resolution procedures should remain, the role of alternative dispute resolution and the structure and functions of employment-related tribunals.
The consultation period will end on 4 September 2009.
