Foster congratulates City of Culture bid team
Friday, 16 July 2010Tourism Minister Arlene Foster has congratulated the team behind the Londonderry City of Culture bid on successfully winning the UK title for 2013.
The Minister said: “I am thrilled at the news that Londonderry has won the UK City of Culture title for 2013. This accolade will further establish the city’s position on the tourism map and I congratulate everyone involved in bringing this win home to Northern Ireland.
“It is a fantastic coup and a great boost to tourism, which is growing increasingly important for the city. Winning this prestigious UK title means Londonderry’s cultural offering, along with its wealth of creative and artistic talent, will be showcased to an international audience.”
Londonderry was one of four shortlisted cities competing for the 2013 UK’s City of Culture title alongside Birmingham, Norwich and Sheffield.
Arlene Foster added: “The City of Culture title offers the opportunity to increase Londonderry’s profile, strengthen the city’s appeal and boost local confidence, attracting new visitors and investment.
“Winning the City of Culture title will create a lasting legacy, not just for the city but also for the whole of Northern Ireland, and deliver a substantial programme of cultural activity.”
