17 June 2009 - Foster encourages local businesses to innovate for success

Small-to-medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Northern Ireland can gain a commercial advantage and help overcome the recession by investing in innovation and research.

That was the message from Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster, as she launched a series of business briefings aimed at the local SME community. The briefings will set out the clear benefits that R&D and innovation can deliver for companies of any size and will feature expert advice and presentations.

The events will be held across Northern Ireland by the Institute of Directors, in association with Vodafone and Invest Northern Ireland. The first event takes place in Omagh on 25 June, with support from Omagh District Council.

Highlighting the value of innovation, particularly in today’s economic climate, Arlene Foster said: “The strongest businesses in any market have innovation and R&D at the centre of their operations. A commitment to developing new products and processes, or improving existing ones, can open up lucrative opportunities that may not otherwise have been available.

“This is especially true during the current economic downturn. By embracing innovation, local businesses regardless of size, can position themselves strongly to attract new customers and protect their existing client base. This will also provide a springboard for future growth when the recovery comes and opportunities multiply.”

The Minister continued: “R&D does not have to involve a significant financial outlay. Examining an existing product, process or service and identifying even simple improvements can often result in an even better experience for customers. In turn this can point the way for investigation into entirely new concepts and solutions.

“Invest NI offers a wide range of support for companies to help them get started. A team of dedicated Innovation Advisors can assist in identifying potential projects which could deliver commercial value in the future. There is also financial support for investments in innovation through initiatives such as Innovation Vouchers and the streamlined, user-friendly Grant for R&D programme.”

In conclusion, the Minister said: “I would encourage all SMEs to attend the briefings and take the opportunity to find out more about how innovation can galvanise their business and help them compete on an international stage.”

The Omagh briefing will take place at 5pm on 25 June in the Strule Arts Centre. Further events are planned for Londonderry, Newry and Ballymena.
