Foster: Tourism advice over-hyped
Friday, 27 August 2010Tourism Minister Arlene Foster has said the latest travel advice issued by the Australian government has been over-hyped.
The Minister said: “According to its website, the travel advice from the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been revised and reissued, but the overall level of the security advice has not changed.
“Similar travel advice about personal safety and potential terrorist activity is given in relation to the United Kingdom as a whole, along with other countries like Sweden and Spain. It is disappointing to note that there has been no reference whatsoever to this in the media.
“Today’s reactions from Australian tourists visiting Northern Ireland and Australian nationals who have set up home here are proof, if proof were needed, that Northern Ireland is seen as a safe and secure destination.
“I will be corresponding with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to express my concern and make them fully aware of the true situation on the ground.”
The Minister added: “Northern Ireland has been established on the world stage as a ‘must see’ destination, which why we have seen a huge increase in the number of tourists over the years.
“Tourists come to Northern Ireland because we offer a warm welcome in the form of first class customer service and accommodation. Our stunning scenery rivals anywhere in the world, which is why people continue to travel from far and wide to enjoy it.
“Recently I had the pleasure of announcing that Londonderry, the 2013 UK City of Culture, will be an official host port in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.
“Hosting a leg of this internationally renowned race, which takes place from 2011-2012, will provide opportunities to further promote Northern Ireland around the world in destinations including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Brazil, Singapore and the USA.”
