Latest high speed broadband services set for Cookstown

Thursday, 22 January 2009

Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster has confirmed the award of a contract to develop a broadband access network in Cookstown, using the latest fibre-optic technology.

North West Electronics, a local Small-Medium Sized Enterprise (SME) based in Londonderry, which specialises in the provision of wireless broadband services will deliver the high speed local broadband access network to Kilcronagh Business Park in the town.

Funding from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) worth £29,000 , will enable the network to be delivered via a fibre-optic communications ring at the business park.

Making the announcement, Arlene Foster said: “The development of the fibre-optic ring, which uses existing underground channels within the business park, is an extremely cost effective way of delivering high speed broadband services in the Cookstown area.

“This project also aims to provide a stimulus for commercial investment in the region, with the potential to meet future demand for higher broadband widths.”

The Minister is fully committed to enhancing Northern Ireland’s broadband services to enable local businesses to compete effectively. She said: “The provision of next generation broadband services to 85% of businesses here by 2011, is a key element in growing the local economy.

“I am determined to explore every option for the delivery of services, particularly into rural areas. This fibre optic project will deliver another viable technology supporting a range of next generation broadband products to address local business needs.

Arlene Foster encouraged businesses and the local Council to exploit the opportunities that this project will bring.

The Minister said: “Today’s investment by DETI, builds on the £237,000 Broadband Fund project that I announced on 9 January 2009. This is also being undertaken by North West Electronics and will deliver high speed broadband services to benefit residential and business users in the rural west, including the Cookstown area. These projects open up opportunities for attracting new businesses into the area.

“It is now important for all stakeholders, including the Council, to actively promote the area as one which offers a range of telecommunications options to address business needs. It is also critical that demand for the new services is maximised to demonstrate to telecoms providers that there are business opportunities in the area to be exploited.”
