Finance Minister, Sammy Wilson, has announced the reappointment of Mr Alan Rainey to the Board of the Northern Ireland Authority for Utility Regulation (the Utility Regulator).
Mr Rainey has been reappointed for a further three years effective from 1 September 2010. He will receive annual remuneration of £9,521 and is expected to devote around 20 days a year to Authority business.

- The Northern Ireland Authority for Utility Regulation (the Utility Regulator) is the non-ministerial government department responsible for regulating the electricity and gas industries as well as water and sewerage services in Northern Ireland, with the aim of promoting the short- and long-term interests of consumers.
- Mr Alan Rainey has been a board member of the Utility Regulator since September 2007. He has held a wide range of engineering and management positions in the energy industry in Ireland. An electrical engineer by profession, he has worked on and directed the development and maintenance of electricity generation, transmission and distribution systems throughout Ireland and overseas, working initially for the Electricity Supply Board in the Republic and latterly for the Viridian Group and then Northern Ireland Energy Holdings.
- This reappointment has been made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland Code of Practice.
- All appointments to the Board of the Northern Ireland Authority for Utility Regulation are made with the approval of the Minister for Finance and Personnel.
- All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland requires the political activity of appointees to be published. Mr Rainey has declared that he has not engaged in any political activity in the last five years. In addition, Mr Rainey does not hold any other public appointment other than his membership of the SEM Committee which flows from his membership of the Authority.
