Minister extends rates exemption for rural ATMs

Finance Minister Sammy Wilson today announced his decision to continue with the rates exemption for cash machines in rural areas.

The exemption had been due to end in April this year.

The Minister said: "Although this is a fairly modest measure, I believe it is one worth preserving for those isolated communities who depend on them – travelling a few miles into the nearest town is not easy for everyone.

"Cash machines play an important part in sustaining rural economies. Evidence shows that money withdrawn locally is spent locally."

The Minister added: “The recent spate of ATM thefts has had a significant impact in a number of rural communities and makes it all the more important that Government demonstrates its continued support for the provision of cash machines in these areas."

Officials will now take forward the necessary subordinate legislation to enable the scheme to be continued beyond April 2010.
