The Minister was commenting on the Ofcom report published today which found that three quarters of UK homes will be online by the end of the year.
The new figures also show that 70% of UK adults now have the internet at home. A further 25% of people in Northern Ireland are interested in getting mobile internet access.
Mr Dodds said: The findings of this report are most interesting. The internet is fast becoming a valuable tool in not only communicating with friends and family, but also in having access to services and information.
“That is why we in government are developing the nidirect website
. The Direct programme is a major part of our plan to reform government services. The website makes accessing government services and information easier, from employment information to transport and housing. Government information is all in one place which makes the site easy to use and a significant improvement in how government interacts with citizens.
“The website went live in March and early results are encouraging. I will shortly be launching a publicity campaign which will promote the benefits of the site to citizens in Northern Ireland."
Ofcom’s findings come ahead of the government's Digital Britain report to be published shortly which will endorse universal broadband.
Mr Dodds added: “Broadband and the internet are valuable resources and it is encouraging to see the increase in interest of people having access at home. We live in an age where access to broadband and internet is becoming increasingly important for people, young and old, to participate in society.”
