Parents and Carers to play a part in better Autism services
Monday, 15 March 2010Parents and carers will have their say in how autism services can be improved in Northern Ireland.
This was the pledge of the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Reference Group at its first meeting today, which was held in Cookstown.
Attending the meeting, Health Minister Michael McGimpsey said: “Autism is a complex and lifelong disability which is sometimes not easy to identify.
“I am committed to improving the treatment and care of those who are affected by autism and, for that reason, I was able to secure an additional £2.02million for autism services.
“Last autumn we published a comprehensive Autism Action Plan and that is now being implemented. However, in order for the improvements set out in that plan to be effective and worthwhile, it is imperative that all people affected by autism – either personally or professionally – work together.
“This includes those parents who tirelessly care for children affected by the disability and those people in the voluntary sector who have developed an excellent understanding of the impact of autism, through first hand experience.
“I also want to express my thanks to Lord Maginnis for taking this key work forward.”
Lord Maginnis of Drumglass who chairs the Reference Group said: “Today’s launch is the result of an important process to ensure the voices of those with experience of the services are shared. The Reference Group will be an integral part of the Regional ASD Network which was set up by the Health Minister, Michael McGimpsey to improve services for people of all ages affected by autism.
“I am impressed by the enthusiasm of our members and their determination to play a valuable role in the planning and decision making process. I will now ensure that the views the Group will be captured and feedback shared with the Regional ASD Network”
