17 June 2009 - Minister McGimpsey condemns racial attacks

Social Services Minister Michael McGimpsey has called on communities to join together in rejecting and condemning the disgraceful racial attacks in Belfast.

The Minister was speaking as he visited the families at the Ozone Leisure Centre, Ormeau Embankment.

The Minister said: “I utterly condemn this outrageous attack on these Roma families. I am appalled at this situation. There is no place in Northern Ireland for this kind of racist violence and abuse. We value the contribution that people from all nationalities make to the life of Northern Ireland. Everyone who lives here deserves to be treated with respect and dignity.

“I am very encouraged that so many of the neighbours and local community groups in south Belfast have rallied to support the families and show their disgust at such appalling acts of intimidation. All communities must join together in condemning this disgraceful behaviour.

The Minister continued: “The health and social care sector will continue to work with the families, providing them with the support and care they need. A considerable amount of work has already been undertaken in the last 48 hours and I want to congratulate the social services emergency response team. The team has been active throughout the night in providing immediate care and provision for the families. As you know there are a number of young children involved and many frightened families. The emergency team provided a range of services such as food, bedding and shelter.

“I am also reassured that all the key statutory agencies – the Housing Executive, Belfast City Council, the PSNI, the education authorities and officials from my department are all working together to ensure the continued safety and support of the families. I also want to thank the church for the care and compassion they showed and their swift response.

“Social Services will continue to provide every support to these families who need help at this time.”
