17 October 2008 - Health Minister launches pharmacy robot

A new technology to improve the dispensing of medications at a Belfast Pharmacy was today officially launched by Health Minister Michael McGimpsey.

The robotic medication dispensary system is a drug storage device that electronically dispenses medications in a controlled fashion.

Speaking at the launch in McKay’s Pharmacy, Holywood Arches, Health Minister Michael McGimpsey said: This new innovation being launched today may be a catalyst for the future in the community pharmaceutical industry and comes shortly after I announced the introduction of free prescriptions for all by 2010.

As a first in Northern Ireland for a community pharmacy, this new initiative will deliver a high-quality, controlled prescription dispensing system to customers and I hope this will undoubtedly provide added benefits to members of the public availing of this service.”

Speaking earlier today, pharmacy owner, James McKay said: It will help boost efficiency and guarantee accuracy in medication dispensation. By automating more of our dispensing tasks, it gives us more time to listen, council and advise patients on how to effectively manage their health condition and therapies.”

Notes to Editors:
