The Independent Review of Autism Services, chaired by Lord Maginnis of Drumglass, has now been completed. This Review contains a number of recommendations which are designed to improve Health and Social Care services for both children and adults affected by autism.
The minister said: “I want to ensure that all children and adults in Northern Ireland affected by autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) receive the highest standards of services delivered in the most efficient manner.
“There is a need to address the shortfall in existing ASD services, in areas such as workforce, specialist assessment, early intervention, structured behavioural interventions and family support. I will ensure that these will be delivered through the ASD Action Plan.”
He continued: “I am eager to improve these services as quickly as possible and I believe that the Action Plan will promote service development in this much needed area of care.
“I welcome the Independent Review which will make a significant contribution to the development of the ASD Action Plan. My Department will now prepare this Action Plan for consultation at the end of August 2008.
“I wish to convey my thanks to Lord Maginnis and all the members of the Independent Review Team for their leadership and commitment shown to the development of this excellent report. I intend to progress its findings as a matter of urgency.”
