21 April 2008 - McGimpsey acknowledges vital work of Northern Ireland cancer registry

Health Minister Michael McGimpsey has praised vital work carried out by the Department of Health funded Northern Ireland Cancer Registry.

Speaking during a visit to the Registry the Minister said: “I am very proud of the work carried out by the Northern Ireland Cancer Registry. In particular the links the registry has developed with Health and Social Care Trusts, patient groups and users of information in the monitoring and delivery of cancer services.

“Cancer is a leading cause of death in Northern Ireland. Every year there are 3,600 deaths from cancer and around 8,500 new cancers are diagnosed.

“At a time when the challenge is great in the fight against cancer, let me reiterate that I remain committed to ensuring that cancer services across Northern Ireland are of the highest possible standard.”

The Minister concluded: “I announced earlier this week that a new satellite radiotherapy centre will be established at Altnagelvin Hospital. It is proof of my commitment to providing high quality and accessible cancer services to the entire population.

“I will continue to ensure that all health and social care services are provided to the highest possible standard and on a fair and equitable basis throughout Northern Ireland.”
