The Minister said that at this moment in time there is no immediate threat to public health in Northern Ireland and robust plans are in place to deal with the emerging situation.
He continued: “A swine influenza A/H1N1 has been confirmed in Mexico and a number of other countries but at this point there have been no cases in Northern Ireland.
“At this stage, the World Health Organisation Influenza Pandemic alert phase remains unchanged but it is clear that these events are unusual and require to be taken seriously.
“I have been fully briefed today on this situation by my Chief Medical Officer and senior officials from the Public Health Agency. Northern Ireland has robust plans in place to deal with situations such as this. We have been working closely with the rest of the UK and the Republic of Ireland for sometime to ensure we are prepared and that the public is protected.
“The H1N1 swine fever virus is sensitive to the antiviral drugs of which we have significant stockpiles for Northern Ireland.
“We will continue to work with our colleagues across the UK and in Ireland and monitor this situation very closely.”
Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr Elizabeth Mitchell said: “There is currently a very low level of flu activity in Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. To date, no cases of swine flu in humans have been identified in Northern Ireland.
“There is no immediate threat to the public in Northern Ireland. However, anyone who has travelled to Mexico or other affected areas within the last week and develops flu-like illness should stay at home to limit contact with others and seek medical advice from a GP.
“You can protect yourself and your family by ensuring you wash your hands regularly and using tissues to cover your mouth and nose when you cough and sneeze.
“Swine influenza viruses are not transmitted by food. You can not get swine influenza from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled and cooked pork and pork products are safe.”
