Statement from the Minister for Health Michael Michael McGimpsey

Friday, 21 August 2009

Health Minister, Michael McGimpsey has said that he has been kept fully informed regarding the developments in the case of Gareth Anderson.

The Minister has been advised by the South Eastern Trust this afternoon that Gareth will be transferred to a specialist liver unit in London where his condition will be closely monitored. This has been made possible by existing and ongoing links that are maintained between the health service in Northern Ireland and specialist units in other parts of the UK.

The Minister said: “Earlier today it was suggested that the full circumstances of this case had not been taken into account. Nothing could be further from the truth. Indeed such scurrilous accusations have been very unhelpful and have only served to undermine the excellence of our health service in Northern Ireland.

“Since Gareth’s admission to hospital, the medical team caring for him at the Ulster Hospital has been in regular and close contact with clinical specialists at King’s College Hospital in London regarding his care and treatment.

“In accordance with proper clinical practice, Gareth’s medical history and current condition have been fully considered in assessing his suitability for a liver transplant.

“At this time Gareth is seriously ill. I understand that following discussions with Gareth’s family, the clinical team at the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust are making arrangements to transfer Gareth to the specialist liver unit at King’s College Hospital in London, where he will receive supportive medical therapy with the aim of stabilising his condition.

“In the last 48 hours I have received regular briefings regarding this case and have spoken with the lead clinician at the Ulster Hospital.

"My thoughts are with Gareth and his family at this difficult time.”
