Statement from Health Minister on Cuan Mhuire
Wednesday, 22 August 2007Commenting on the closure of Cuan Mhuire, Health Minister, Michael McGimpsey said: “I acknowledge that Cuan Mhuire has provided treatment and care for many people. I also know of the high regard in which it is held by users of the service and the local community and of their disappointment at taking the difficult decision to close.
“I understand that the Board of Cuan Mhuire took the decision to close on the basis of advice from Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (RQIA) and the light of the findings of an RQIA report into the services it provided.
“This report identified a number of serious concerns about the safety of residents at this facility. The main concerns were about the inadequacy of the fire safety and health and safety arrangements.
“The safety of people using health and social care services across the independent and statutory sector is of paramount importance.
“I have asked the Southern Board to work with health and social care services, housing agencies and other relevant organisations to ensure that all residents receive all the support they need.”
The Department does not provide funding to Cuan Mhuire. However, my Department would be happy to work with other government departments, health and social services boards, relevant agencies and the organisation to develop services in the future."
