04 June 2009 - Health Minister welcomes new family mediation information campaign

Health Minister Michael McGimpsey today welcomed a new campaign which will provide information and advice to couples going through separation, focusing on what is best for their children.

The Minister said: “Separation is a sad reality in today’s society and we all as parents want to ensure that the experience is managed in the best possible way for our children. There are services available for those who are experiencing relationship problems, such as relationship counselling and therapy, but for those that are in the process of separating there has been a lack of support.

“Family Mediation provides this vital and confidential support service and enables couples to achieve improved post-divorce relationships between themselves and their children.”

The Minister continued: “This valuable new campaign stems from my Department’s family and parenting strategy – Families Matter, which I launched earlier this year. In conjunction with other initiatives being taken forward through Families Matter, it will greatly assist parents managing their separation process and maintaining positive contact with their children.”

Sheena Bell, Professional Practice Consultant, spoke of her appreciation for the support of DHSSPS in this campaign to highlight the awareness of family mediation in Northern Ireland. She said: “Family Mediation Northern Ireland (FMNI) was established as an independent charity in 2004 with the aim of providing a recognised, affordable, accessible and high quality mediation service to families who are experiencing separation or divorce throughout Northern Ireland.

"Mediation is a voluntary process whereby couples, with the support of a neutral third party (the mediator) identify and build agreement on issues arising from the separation or divorce, relating to children, finance and property. The use of this media material should help inform the community of the advantages of family mediation.”

The campaign comprises a booklet, DVD, wallet cards and posters, which are to be distributed to GP surgeries, pharmacists, family lawyers, and health care family practitioners for use by statutory bodies, health professionals, judiciary, voluntary and community bodies and members of the public.
