29 January 2009 - DHSSPS publishes new Code of Practice to protect service user confidentiality

The Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety today published a Code of Practice on Protecting the Confidentiality of Service User information.

Health Minister Michael McGimpsey said: “Thousands of people use our services every day, entrusting health and social care staff with their personal information.

“This Code of Practice is an invaluable reference document which aims to support all those staff involved in health and social care to make good decisions about the protection, use and disclosure of service user information.

“People using our services should be assured that we will treat their personal information with the utmost care and respect.”

  1. The Code of Practice has been developed jointly by the Department and the Privacy Advisory Committee whose primary role is to advise health and social care organisations about the use and disclosure if information relating to service users (patients and clients).
