Protect your family’s health in the summer with nidirect

Tuesday, 6 July 2010

Members of the public who have concerns about their health this summer can submit a question to a special web chat on http://www.nidirect.gov.uk

The Department of Health Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) and Public Health Agency (PHA) have teamed up with nidirect to answer individual questions about various ways to stay healthy during the summer. A team of health professionals will post responses to questions on Thursday 8 July at 2.30pm.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Michael McBride said: “There are many increased risks to our health over the summer months and many people, like the very young or elderly, are particularly vulnerable. Whether it’s over exposure to the sun, increased levels of alcohol consumption or contracting travel related health problems, there are steps that you can take to help make sure you and your family are protected.

“This web chat provides an excellent opportunity to have some of your questions answered, to make sure that you are doing everything possible to look after your health. I would also encourage anyone who is concerned about any aspect of their health to visit their GP – if in doubt, get checked out.”

Some things that people may be concerned about include:

  • ·if you are using the right sunscreen
  • ·if your children are getting enough protection from the sun
  • ·the risk of developing skin cancer
  • ·health risks or issues to be aware of on holiday
  • ·if you are drinking too much alcohol because of the warm weather
  • ·how to prevent heat exhaustion and heat stroke

To submit a question for the web chat, email nidirect at feedback@nidirect.gov.uk

Names, email addresses and any other personal details from enquirers will not be published and they will not be used for any other purpose.
