National Bike Week, June 16 – 24, encourages all people from all walks of life to discover or rediscover the joys of cycling which can help build towards a fitter and healthier lifestyle.
Dr McBride said “National Bike Week provides an opportunity for people to participate in physical activity which can tackle health problems such as obesity and heart disease.
“Obesity is a growing problem within Northern Ireland. Eating too many foods that are high in salt, fat or sugar and not taking enough exercise is the cause of this problem. A balanced diet and a more active lifestyle is the key to a healthier future.
“Cycling is an aerobic activity which increases the body’s demand for oxygen therefore strengthening the Heart, improving circulation and burning fat.
“I would encourage those who do not exercise regularly to begin slowly and do not over exert yourself. If you have any doubts what level of physical activity you should be doing consult your GP but most importantly enjoy yourself.”
