Public Safety Minister launches public consultation on new Emergencies Order
Tuesday, 8 June 2010Public Safety Minister Michael McGimpsey today launched a 15 week public consultation on the Fire and Rescue Services (Emergencies) (NI) Order 2010.
The proposed Order will make it a statutory requirement for Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) to make provision for attending emergencies other than fires and road traffic accidents.
Mr McGimpsey said: "The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service is a vital public service which is increasingly undertaking a more prominent rescue role. However in order to strengthen and clarify the role, powers and duties of the NIFRS it is essential that we introduce new legislation which reflects the broader role of today’s service."
Encouraging a broad response on the public consultation, Mr McGimpsey continued: "I welcome all responses and would encourage all who have an interest in the service provided by the NIFRS to examine these proposals and make their views known."
The consultation will end on 17 September 2010.
