Health Minister opens learning disability respite home in Dungannon
Wednesday, 11 March 2009A £1million purpose built facility providing respite care for adults with a learning disability has been officially opened by the Health Minister.
Woodlawn House in Dungannon provides respite care for 50 people from the Armagh, Dungannon, Newry and Mourne areas.
Speaking at the opening Michael McGimpsey said: “Woodlawn House is an excellent facility which will provide adults with a learning disability with a ‘home from home’ environment during their stay.
“All of the bedrooms are single with en-suite facilities. Woodlawn House also has two comfortable lounges, a quiet room, a multi-sensory room, a dining room and an enclosed patio area.
“Staff provide a range of care and residents are encouraged to participate in a wide range of activities, go on trips, meet new friends and develop new interests.
“Woodlawn House provides a flexible approach to respite and is therefore ideal for families and carers of adults with a learning disability. I am pleased to open this new facility and I congratulate all who have been involved with this project.”
Before arriving at Woodlawn House, the Minister visited residents and staff at Longstone Hospital in Armagh and Orchard House in Loughgall.
Longstone Hospital is an assessment and treatment centre for people with a learning disability. Orchard House is a Supported Living Unit.
The Minister said: “Reforming learning disability services is a top priority for me. I am committed to making a difference to the lives of people with a learning disability by modernising the services they receive and helping them to live independently in the community.
“Today I have seen at first hand the range of treatment and care available for learning disability in the Southern Trust area. All of the staff I have met today are committed to providing an excellent standard of care.”
