15 November 2007 - Minister commends firefighters after Omagh house fire tragedy

Public Safety Minister, Michael McGimpsey, has paid tribute to the firefighters who dealt with the house fire which claimed seven lives in Omagh.

Speaking during a visit to Omagh fire station today, the Minister said: "The Government, the Department and the local community all thank you for your efforts in trying to save this family. These tragic deaths have had a devastating impact on this community and all those involved in responding to the fire.

"Once again I wish to express my deepest sympathies to the relations and friends of this family on the loss of their loved ones.

"The fact that so many children lost their lives is particularly distressing and I realise that it has been a traumatic experience. I want you to know that we are all grateful for the extremely difficult job you carry out each day and your willingness to risk your own lives to save others.

"I would also like to praise the British Red Cross Fire and Emergency Support Service for their unstinting support for firefighters and the public in Omagh during the last few days."

Once again, the Minister reminded the public to ensure they had smoke alarms fitted and working in their homes. He said it was also vital that people had a good bedtime routine to prevent the risk of fire, and an escape plan.
