Health Minister announces £2.2million investment in facility for disabled children

Tuesday, 3 November 2009

Health Minister Michael McGimpsey has today announced a £2.2million investment to develop a new residential respite facility for disabled children in the Western Trust area.

The new facility, which will be based at the former Omagh General Hospital site, will significantly enhance respite services to the local community by catering for the needs of disabled children and their families within the Omagh and Fermanagh area.

The Minister said: “I am committed to providing innovative and integrative support services for children with disabilities and their families. Residential respite, particularly for children with complex needs, is an extremely important component in delivering these services.

“This investment will see the development of a state of the art facility with eight residential places, which will enable children with complex needs and their families to avail of the opportunities and services they deserve.”

The Western Trust will now progress to detailed design and procurement for this £2.2million capital scheme with an expectation that work will commence on site by the end of 2009, with an anticipated completion date of December 2010.

Commenting on the Minister’s announcement, Western Trust Assistant Director of Children’s Mental Health and Disability, Mr Kieran Downey said: “This news represents real tangible progress and I am delighted to share the news with parents and carers of the children who will avail of the improved services.

“The child-friendly facility will host a dedicated staff team allowing parents and carers to have a much need break from their ongoing caring responsibility.”

Notes to editors:

  1. The new facility will offer short term breaks for children up to 18 years of age.
  2. The main purpose will be to ensure that the break is a positive experience for both the children and the families who require ongoing support to provide care.
