26 October 2007 - Appointment of one Member to the Western Health and Social Services (HSS) Council

The appointment of one District Councillor as a member of the Western HSS Council has been announced.

The appointment of Councillor Jim McKeever is for the period from 15th October 2007 to 31 May 2009.

Notes to Editors:

1. Health and Social Services Councils were established in 1991 to represent the public interest in the health and social services. The Councils are required by law to keep under review the operation of these services and to make recommendations for improvements or provide advice on their operation.

2. There are four Health and Social Services Councils, one for each Health and Social Services Board area. The Eastern HSS Council has 30 members; the other three Councils each have 24 members.

3. HSS Council members are all appointed with the approval of the Minister. Membership comprises at least 40% District/Borough Council nominations, at least 30% representatives of voluntary organisations with an interest in health and social services, and the remainder, people regarded as having an interest in health and social services.

4. HSS Council members are not paid but are entitled to claim expenses for work carried out on the Council’s behalf.

5. The appointment was made in accordance with the Code of Practice issued by the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland.

Western Health and Social Services Council

Councillor Jim McKeever lives in Eglinton Co Derry. Cllr McKeever was formerly a Mortgage Consultant and prior to this, a development officer with Development Action for Our Rural Environment (DARE). He is currently a member of the NI Fire and Rescue Service Board for which he receives expenses and is a member of the SDLP.
