Second swine flu related death in Northern Ireland

The Department can confirm that an infant who died in a hospital in Northern Ireland, had tested positive for swine flu. However the infant did have a heart condition which has been confirmed as the cause of death.

The family has asked for privacy at this time, and no further details will be made available.

Health Minister Michael McGimpsey said: “My sincere sympathies go the family at this tragic and very sad time. I understand that there will be a level of public and media interest in this death but we all must remember that at the centre of this tragic incident is a family who are grieving.

“The family has asked for their identity to be kept private. We are respecting their wishes and will not be releasing any further details to let the family come to terms with their loss."
