Northern Ireland Environment Agency explores 16th century castle
Friday, 3 July 2009Visitors to one of Co Down’s most spectacular medieval monuments are to get a unique insight into what life was like for its early residents.
Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) today confirmed visitors to Portaferry Castle on 13 and 14 July will get the inside track on what life was like in those turbulent times from a ‘Man at Arms’.
NIEA archaeologist Maybelline Gormley explained: Events like this one at Portaferry Castle are designed to bring history to life.
This is a wonderful opportunity to get an understanding of how people survived in that era.
Our Man at Arms will also demonstrate the weaponry and armour of the period.”
Portaferry Castle was built by the Savage Family in the 15th century and was altered in the 16th and again in the 17th centuries before it was abandoned.
The tower house that once guarded the narrow entrance to Strangford Lough is now in ruins.
Events under NIEA’s ‘Living History’ programme are taking place at historical sites across Northern Ireland.
