23 June 2009 - Agency issues rallying call for all bog snorkellers

The Northern Ireland Environment Agency today launched another search for a top bog snorkeller.

Entry forms are now available for the annual Northern Ireland Bog Snorkelling Championships at Peatlands Park near Dungannon.

The event, which forms part of the International Bog Days celebrations, takes place on July 26 and attracts competitors from all over Ireland.

Colin Gates, Assistant Warden and event organizer, said: “Competitors have to swim two lengths of a 60-yard bog drain with the aid of a snorkel, mask and flippers and without using any conventional swimming strokes.

“Anyone over the age of 12 can have a go and the good news is it’s free to enter!

“This energetic sport is very popular and gets people ‘literally’ into the bog. This year we have introduced a Fun Run where participants can swim just one length.

“We would encourage competitors to dress up for this and there will be prizes for best fancy dress. We hope lots of people come along to join in and to cheer on the brave competitors.”
