Fort steels itself for viking invasion

Thursday, 11 June 2009

The village of Hillsborough is bracing itself for a Viking invasion later this month.

The Northern Ireland Environment Agency has confirmed a demonstration of Viking battle techniques will be one of the attractions at this year’s Military Mayhem event in Hillsborough Fort on Saturday 13 June.

Visitors will also be able to see how warfare developed over the centuries with archery and sword fight demonstrations, a 17th Century cannon and muskets and vehicles and equipment from the First and Second World Wars.

NIEA Chief Executive Roy Ramsay said: “This free event at Hillsborough Fort offers people a wonderful chance to learn about our defence heritage, our past and the history of this impressive site in an enjoyable and fun way.

“We have a wide range of military themed activities taking place throughout the day including displays of pike and musket and 17th Century horsemanship.

“It promises to be a noisy but fun day for all the family.”
