Brothers to pay £20,550 for illegal waste offences

Two South Down building contractor brothers were today made the subject of two confiscation orders of £10,000 each at Newry Crown Court for illegal waste offences.

John Taylor (48) of Tamnaharry Hill, Mayobridge and George Taylor (50) of Greenan Road, Greenan, trading as Taylor Civil Engineering, were also fined £550 in relation to the illegal deposit of 250 tonnes of construction and demolition waste (including concrete, brick, wood and wiring) at a site owned by George Taylor on the Greenan Road, Greenan.

The court made the confiscation orders under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 in relation to benefit from criminal conduct. This has to be paid within 12 months.

John Taylor and George Taylor were fined on one count of each of the following Articles of the Waste and Contaminated Land Order (Northern Ireland) 1997: 4(1)(a) - depositing of controlled waste in or on land unless a waste management licence authorising the deposit is in force and the deposit is in accordance with the licence – fined £250. 4(1)(b) - keeping and treating waste in or on land without a waste management licence – fined £250. 4(1)(c) - treating, keeping or disposing of controlled waste in a manner likely to cause pollution of the environment or harm to human health – fined £50.
