Tayto (Northern Ireland) Ltd of Tandragee Castle, Tandragee, pleaded guilty to making an unconsented discharge into a waterway at Armagh Magistrates' Court today.
The Company was fined £2,500 plus analysis costs of £132.74.
On 1 August 2006, following a complaint from a member of the public, an Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) official found that a tributary of the Cusher River had been badly polluted by a discharge from the company’s premises. Samples confirmed that the effluent from the premises was polluting.
Notes to Editors:
- Tayto (Northern Ireland) Ltd was charged under Article 9 of the Water (Northern Ireland) Order 1999 of making a discharge without the consent of the Department.
- A pipe carrying contaminated process effluent to a treatment plant had become dislodged, allowing contaminated effluent to enter the storm drainage system that discharged to the waterway.
- Tayto (Northern Ireland) Ltd had applied for consent and carried out remedial action to prevent such an incident occurring again.
