Foster praises Lurgan school's anti-litter project
Thursday, 24 April 2008Environment Minister Arlene Foster today visited Lurgan Junior High School to hear at first hand from year 10 pupils about their project to help to reduce litter.
The pupils’ “Decisions, Litter, Animation” project highlights the negative environmental impacts of litter and aims to persuade people to dispose of their litter properly. The minister said:
“One of the most effective ways to reduce the litter problem is to change the attitudes and behaviours of those people who, for whatever reason, drop litter onto our streets and public spaces instead of putting it in a bin.
“It is very encouraging to learn about projects by young people which are designed to stop people littering and thereby improve the quality of life in our local neighbourhoods and communities.”
As part of the project the pupils made wall murals from various forms of litter found around the school and within their local community. The pupils also designed scripts and storyboards and created cartoons for computer animations to persuade people to stop littering. The minister praised the work of the pupils, she said:
“I am very impressed with the enthusiasm shown by the young people involved with this innovative project and their understanding of environmental issues.”
