28 April 2008 - Displaying MOT discs become legal requirement

The Department of the Environment’s Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) is making the display of MOT discs a legal requirement from 1 May 2008.

Motorists will face a fine of up to £200 if they fail to display their MOT disc on their vehicle. It is hoped this initiative will go some way to ensuring private cars and motorcycles used on our roads don’t present a danger to the public.

Brendan Magee, Chief Executive, DVA, said: “Compliance with the vehicle test system is a major factor in ensuring that the vehicles used on Northern Ireland’s roads are roadworthy. Research shows that many motorists forget to apply for their vehicle test until either after their MOT has expired or they have to tax their vehicle.

“The introduction of the mandatory display of the MOT disc will not only act as a reminder to vehicle users that their vehicle is due a test but it will aid enforcement by the DVA.”

The DVA has introduced a number of initiatives that have impacted on the level of compliance with the vehicle testing system, including the introduction of Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN), provision of MOT reminders, telephone and online booking and the introduction of MOT discs.
