Developer fined for sewage pollution

Today at Newry Magistrates' Court, F P McCann (Developments) Ltd of Drumard Road, Magherafelt, Co. Londonderry was fined £5,000 plus costs for a pollution offence.

The pollution occurred at a housing development constructed by the company at Dromore, Co. Down. The court hear that on 31 May 2006, an officer from the Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) discovered serious sewage pollution escaping into a waterway at Dromore, Co. Down and traced it to a nearby housing development being constructed by F P McCann.

F P McCann (Developments) Ltd pleaded guilty in court to causing pollution and to discharging sewage effluent without the consent of EHS.

NOTES TO EDITORS:

F P McCann (Developments) Ltd was charged on two counts under The Water (Northern Ireland) Order 1999, namely:

  1. Under Article 7, of discharging or depositing poisonous, noxious or polluting matter so that it entered a waterway.
  2. Under Article 9, of discharging sewage effluent to a waterway without the consent of the Department of Environment.
