28 August 2008 - Dundrod farmer fined for polluting discharge to waterway

Edmond Irvine, of Thorndale Road, Dundrod Co. Antrim, was fined £1,000 plus costs at Lisburn Magistrates Court today, for making a polluting discharge to a waterway.

On 9 November 2007, a Water Quality Inspector, acting on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (formally the Environment and Heritage Service) inspected the Crumlin River at Thompson’s Bridge on the Carnaghliss Road. The river was discoloured, smelling of farm effluent with a large amount of sewage fungus on the bed of the waterway and the source of the pollution was traced to the farm premises of Mr Irvine.

A sample taken at the time of the incident confirmed that the discharge contained poisonous, noxious and polluting matter which would have been potentially harmful to fish life in a receiving watercourse.
