05 December 2007 - Limavady laundry fined £4,000 for pollution

Limavady Laundry Services of Seacoast Road, Limavady, was today fined £4,000 at Limavady Magistrates Court, following two separate pollution incidents.

The court heard that on 1 August 2006, an officer from the Environment and Heritage Service discovered a crack in one wall of the company’s effluent treatment plant.  This was allowing a steaming grey effluent to discharge to a nearby stream, which in turn flowed to the nearby River Roe.  Analysis confirmed that the effluent would have been harmful to fish.

On a second visit on 6 November 2006, it was found that the wall had not been repaired

The magistrate imposed fines totaling £4,000 plus court costs of £71 plus analysis costs of £286.54.
