06 December 2007 - Biodiversity - What on earth is it?

DOE’s Permanent Secretary, Stephen Peover, has praised the thought- provoking messages generated at the current “Biodiversity” exhibition at Belfast’s W5.

He said: “This exhibition has demonstrated that we all have a role to play in conserving biodiversity because it impacts on our everyday life. It shows clear links between our actions and how they affect biodiversity here and across the world.”

The Permanent secretary also added that: ‘‘Northern Ireland’s environment was vital to the economy and the Environment and Heritage Service seeks to encourage research into understanding how we can protect and encourage bio-diversity.”

“Biodiversity: What on Earth is it” is sponsored by the Natural Environment Research Council and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council which are non departmental public bodies responsible for the funding and management of research, training and knowledge transfer of environmental sciences.

The exhibition explains biodiversity and demonstrates how it can assist in combating challenges such as climate change and feeding a growing world population. The exhibition leaves Belfast in mid December.
