The scrap merchant, Ignatius Geddis (61), of Belfast Road, Bangor, was fined £32,500 at Bangor Magistrates’ court on 14 December 2007 on five charges of breaching waste management legislation.
The five charges related to incidents during 2004 and 2005 at his scrap yard in Helen’s Bay.
Mr Geddis has been given 16 weeks to pay the fines.

Mr Geddis was fined under Article 4(1)(b) and Article 4(6) of The Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order 1997, involving the keeping of waste on land without a waste management licence.
The penalties for each of the five charges were as follows:
- £2,500 fine and 2 months’ suspended sentence.
- £10,000 fine and 4 months’ suspended sentence.
- £10,000 fine and 4 months’ suspended sentence.
- £5,000 fine and 2 months’ suspended sentence.
- £5,000 fine and 2 months’ suspended sentence.
Charges 1, 2 and 3 are concurrent, while 4 and 5 are consecutive.
