Minister shocked by this year’s increase in road deaths

Tuesday, 8 December 2009

Environment Minister Edwin Poots today urged all road users to exercise caution as road deaths this year have now equalled last year’s total.

Mr Poots made his comments as news emerged that a driver was tragically killed today. This is the 107th victim on our roads this year, the same as for the whole of 2008.

Mr Poots said: "So far this year, 107 people have died on Northern Ireland’s roads. Last year’s fatalities at 107 were the lowest on record and, with three weeks left to the end of the year, it is of great concern that last year’s tragedies have been equalled already.

He continued: "The figures are of course disappointing, but they are disappointing every year and they were disappointing last year too as 107 people still lost their lives in the most shocking of circumstances.

“Each and every victim was very likely healthy and well - and expected to come home that night - but they didn’t. My thoughts are with all those bereaved families."

The Minister said that this terrible milestone should serve as a reminder to everyone about getting the road safety message across. "We have had a long period of gradual decline in the number of road deaths and the long term trend is still downwards.

"However, even one death is one too many. As road users we all have a responsibility to prevent our own, or anyone else’s family going through this heartache, especially now coming up to Christmas.

"For years my Department has been urging road users to pay attention, expect the unexpected, slow down, always wear your seatbelt and never ever drink and drive.

"These messages still hold true and, if you heed them, they could save your life."
