06 February 2008 - Arlene Foster in discussions with Hilary Benn

Environment Minister Arlene Foster has discussed a number of environmental issues with the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Hilary Benn MP.

The meeting, which took place in London earlier today, was attended by Ministers from Scotland and Wales, and included Agriculture Minister, Michelle Gildernew.

Speaking afterwards, Arlene Foster said: "This meeting covered a broad range of environmental and rural affairs issues. It was an opportunity for some of the ministers representing the Devolved Assemblies and Parliaments in the UK to sit down face to face with each other and our London colleagues, to discuss a number of areas of mutual interest. While it is the case that much environmental legislation originates in Europe, it is vital that we act in concert with our DEFRA colleagues when preparing for, and acting on, such laws.

"It is always useful to engage in this type of dialogue. The big issues which are confronting us transcend any differences in our political systems, and it was valuable to engage with others to ensure that we were agreed on the road ahead."
