A Co Antrim company was fined a total of £24,000 plus £2,629.76 court costs yesterday for polluting offences.
Ulster Farm By-Products, the animal rendering operation near Glenavy in County Antrim, was fined at Antrim Magistrates’ Court for five offences of polluting the Glenavy River between March and August 2007.
The Industrial Pollution and Radiochemical Inspectorate of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA), formerly the Environment and Heritage Service, regulates the company under the Pollution Prevention and Control Regulations (NI) 2003. The limits for the discharge of effluent into the river are set out in a permit issued by NIEA.
The company pleaded guilty to the offences which all involved exceeding the limit for ammoniacal nitrogen in the effluent being discharged to the river.
