Publication of Northern Ireland Municipal Waste Management Statistics July to September 2009

The latest edition of the Northern Ireland Municipal Waste Management Statistics, containing

  • The remaining municipal waste was sent to landfill, approximately 64%. The proportion sent to landfill for this quarter was almost two percentage points lower compared to that for July to September 2008.

  • Of the municipal waste collected for recycling, green waste made up approaching half (47%), and this was over twice the proportion accounted for by paper (22%). A relatively small proportion was accounted for by glass and cans (7%).

Household Waste

  • Of all household waste collected, approximately 20% was recycled and just over 19% was composted. The overall proportion of household waste sent for recycling and composting saw an increase of half a percent compared to the corresponding quarter in 2008.
  • The percentage of household waste sent to landfill was just below 61%. This is a reduction of just over one percentage point on  the July to September 2008 figure.

  • There were 132 kilogrammes of household waste collected per head of population in Northern Ireland, of which 52 kilogrammes was recycled or composted.

Biodegradable Waste

Northern Ireland has an allocation of 470,000 tonnes of biodegradable municipal waste that can be sent to landfill in 2009/10.  In the period July to September 2009 a total of 94,595 tonnes of biodegradable waste were sent to landfill, which equates to 20% of the annual allocation.

2. There are nine indicators covered in the report, covering municipal waste, household waste and biodegradable municipal waste.  The indicators have been calculated from the WasteDataFlow (WDF) system, which is used by all UK local authorities to report municipal waste.
