Garrison soldier to help bring history of tower alive

Monday, 20 July 2009

The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) today confirmed that visitors to Magilligan Martello Tower in August will have the opportunity to explore the tower with a Garrison Soldier.

NIEA Archaeologist Rhonda Robinson explained: “Each Sunday in August, visitors to Magilligan Martello Tower will have the opportunity to learn more about Martello towers and the life of an early 19th century Garrison Soldier who would have served here.”

Martello towers were built round the Irish and English coasts between 1804 and 1812 to guard against Napoleonic invasion. Magilligan Martello Tower, built in 1812, together with another at Greencastle on the Donegal coast opposite commanded the strategically important entrance to Lough Foyle.

These events are part of NIEA’s ‘Living History’ events held across Northern Ireland. Entry is free.
