27 June 2007 - Foster maintains momentum on local government reform

Environment Minister Arlene Foster has told the Local Government Taskforce that she wants to drive forward the modernisation programme.

Earlier today while chairing a meeting of the Taskforce Strategic Leadership Board, which includes elected representatives from the five main parties, The Minister said: “Work on modernising local government needs to be driven forward in parallel with the work to review earlier RPA structural and functional decisions. It is important that we do not lose momentum on earlier valuable work.”

The Minister said that the modernisation programme will strengthen the way in which councils work by modernising the policy and legislative framework within which councils operate. It will also address the capacity of members to deliver accountable citizen-centred local government services. In addition, it will help local councils deliver business-related services in a way that is standardised and simple, and which provides value for money, enabling resources to be released by councils to improve front line service delivery.
